This town was settled in the 1870s in the beautiful Qu’Appelle River valley. Queen City Kinsmen host Kinsmen Rock'N the Valley festival each year. which attracts thousands to this town just northwest of Regina.

This town was first named Sussex by its residents, but this name was rejected by the Post Office citing its prior use in New Brunswick. In 1884, they selected "Craven" named after William Craven, Earl of Craven (1606-1697), who was noted for his devotion to Queen Elizabeth I.
