This town, about 110 km southwest of Regina, is in the middle of the flat prairie. The community was named after Father Louis-Joseph-Pierre Gravel, a missionary priest (1868-1926) who sttled in the area with his five brothers and a sister. They wanted to resettle Quebec and New England francophones is the west. The community has long been recognized as the French cultural, educational and religious center of Saskatchewan, being home to the French cultural "Centre Culturel Maillard."

The town also has a 9-hole golf course and camping at nearby Shamrock Regional Park (to the north) and Thompson Lake Region Park (to the south). Annual events include: Gravelbourg Trade Fair (June), Prairie Pride Lions Fall Market (Oct).

Cathedrale Notre-Dame de L’Assomption (our Lady of Assumption)

This cathedral, built in 1918, is noted for its beautiful interior murals painted over a 10 year period by its founding pastor, Charles Maillard. Open July through August 9am to 5 pm, except Sundays and Tuesday ( 1 pm to 5 pm). Free admission.

Elementary School Art Gallery
immediately west of Cathedral

located in the former chapel of the "Convent of Jesus and Mary", the gallery holds reproductions of many Renaissance European masters. Open September to June: Mondays 3 pm - 8 pm, Wednesdays & Fridays 9 am - 12 noon; July & August Wednesdays 1 pm - 6 pm, and Saturdays 10 and - 1 pm (Closed all other days). Free admission.

This museum houses a collection of early pioneer memorabilia, with many artifacts from early Saskatchewan residents including Dr A. Soucy, Fr. Gravel (town founder) and Maillard (cathedral’s painter)
