This town, about 110 km southwest of Regina, is in the middle of the flat prairie. The community was named after Father Louis-Joseph-Pierre Gravel, a missionary priest (1868-1926) who sttled in the area with his five brothers and a sister. They wanted to resettle Quebec and New England francophones is the west. The community has long been recognized as the French cultural, educational and religious center of Saskatchewan, being home to the French cultural "Centre Culturel Maillard."

The town also has a 9-hole golf course and camping at nearby Shamrock Regional Park (to the north) and Thompson Lake Region Park (to the south). Annual events include: Gravelbourg Trade Fair (June), Prairie Pride Lions Fall Market (Oct).
